I didn't test this on version 9 yet, but with VMware Workstation 8, you can just create a new unencrypted descriptor file and use it with the encrypted VM. Maybe worth a try.
Unless you already did, ensure you at leas backup the VM's configuration (.vmx) file, because this file contains the encryption key.
