Your "issue" with the free version of VMware will be the 32GB RAM limitation.
This doesn't seem significant for you now given you only have 16GB RAM - but once you have a server purchased, it's easy to wish you had a bit more RAM in it. SBS on its own would appreciate 16GB RAM, and the rest would add up.
